Pasture Raised Lamb
Taste the countryside.
Our hair sheep are exclusively bred for meat. The flavor is much milder than traditional lamb, so it appeals to a broader range of tastes.
The ewes graze pasture year-round, rain or shine just as animals in the wild do. They have their babies in May when it is warm and sunny and the grass is green. This syncs the natural cycle of plant growth with the needs of the animals.
By moving them to fresh pasture regularly we ensure that they have access to quality, abundant food at all times. Grazed pastures are rested and fully recovered before being grazed again. Our ewe’s seasonal cycles are synchronized with the natural cycles of our local climate which mimics the natural migratory patterns of wild grazing animals.
The lambs grow up on their mother’s milk while learning to eat the pasture plants. Eventually their diet transitions solely to grazed forages as they wean off their mother’s milk. When they reach mature size in the late fall, they are harvested for meat. This feeds us and it keeps the herd size in balance with pasture forages.
This is a sustainable model for both healthy sheep and the land.
Valyn Pastures
[Vuh•lin]
definition: 1) Of the Valley; 2) Strong and Healthy;
Our name says it all! Our goal is to support a healthy community of healthy people by producing healthy foods. We are located right here in the Uncompahgre Valley raising local food for our local community.
The soil is the basis for our system. It is a living ecosystem made up of living organisms. A single teaspoon of healthy soil can contain billions of microscopic organisms!
Nurturing this life in the soil is vital to a food chain that generates health and strength in the diverse plants that grow in it, the animals which graze it, and the people who enjoy the harvest.
